What Is 14K Gold-Filled?

​

Gold-filled is a layered gold product made with real, US-sourced gold. With minimal care, it maintains its golden shine for a lifetime.

The material is constructed in two or three layers: a core of jewelers' brass, with a gold alloy bonded to the surface using heat and pressure. Unlike plated or electroplated metals, gold-filled is legally required to contain a minimum of 5%, or 1/20, gold by weight. This proportion is described by the karatage of the gold alloy used. Our pieces are made with 14-karat gold-filled metal, meaning the gold layer is 14 karats and makes up 1/20th of the material's total weight.

Is Gold-Filled the Same as Gold-Plated?

​

No, the two are quite different. Gold-plated jewelry has an extremely thin layer of solid gold applied to a brass base, typically accounting for 0.05% or less of the product's total weight. Because this layer is so thin, it tends to wear off relatively quickly, exposing the brass underneath.

Gold-filled, by contrast, contains 5% real gold by weight and is built to maintain its shine for a lifetime. This makes it a significantly higher-quality, longer-lasting alternative to plated jewelry.

Because of its gold content and construction, gold-filled jewelry does not flake, peel, or wear away with normal use, and it resists tarnishing far better than sterling silver.

Gold-filled jewelry is well-suited to everyday wear and can accompany you through most daily activities, including exposure to water. However, to preserve the finish and extend the life of your piece, we recommend removing it before swimming in chlorinated pools or spending extended time in saltwater, as prolonged exposure to these elements can gradually dull the metal's shine.

To clean your gold-filled jewelry, use a soft cloth or a gentle wash with mild soap and lukewarm water, then pat dry with a soft towel. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and ultrasonic cleaning devices, as these can damage the surface over time.

Pearl and Mother-of-Pearl Care

Several of our designs feature freshwater pearls, mother-of-pearl, or a combination of both. These are natural, organic materials with a delicate surface that requires more careful handling than metal alone.

Pearls and mother-of-pearl are porous and sensitive to chemical exposure. We strongly advise removing pearl jewelry before showering, swimming, or any contact with chlorine or saltwater, as these can strip away the natural luster, cause discoloration, and weaken the material over time. Everyday products such as perfume, hairspray, lotion, and sweat can also affect the surface, so we recommend applying these products before putting on your jewelry, not after.

After each wear, gently wipe pearls or mother-of-pearl with a soft, dry cloth to remove any residual oils or moisture from skin contact. Store these pieces separately from other jewelry, ideally wrapped in a soft cloth or pouch, to prevent scratching, since pearls can be marked by contact with harder materials.

General Storage

When not in use, store your jewelry in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. A fabric-lined jewelry box or individual pouches help prevent tangling, scratching, and unnecessary exposure to air and moisture, keeping each piece looking its best for years to come.​​​​
